MISS NEW YORK NAMES VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Shelby Cohen, account executive at Todd Martin Public Relations, recognized by the Miss New York Scholarship Organization.
Albany, NY, July 1, 2009 - The title of Miss New York 2009 wasn't the only award presented at the finals of the competition last Sunday afternoon. The Miss New York Scholarship Organization presented its annual Volunteer of the Year Award as well. This year's award went to Shelby Cohen of the Miss Thousand Islands Organization. Shelby has participated in the Miss America Organization for 18 years, starting in 1991 when her chorus director asked her to escort the judges for the pageant. Over a period of four years, she worked on the pageant in many different jobs behind the scenes as well as performing several times on stage during the Miss New York Pageant.
Shelby competed in the 1999 Miss Thousand Islands Pageant, and came in first runner up. Immediately following the pageant, she joined the board officially as contestant coordinator. Shelby is currently the public affairs officer and assistant producer of the Miss Thousand Islands Scholarship Pageant, as well as the president of the Miss New York Locals Association.
Shelby is an account executive at Todd Martin Public Relations. She previously was the community relations and employee communications lead for Lockheed Martin Systems Integration in Owego, NY.
Shelby has extensive theatre, music and public speaking experience. She graduated from Geneseo State University with a B.A. in communications and a public relations minor. She resides in Owego, NY.

Miss New York 2009 and the Miss New York Scholarship Organization Board of Directors want to congratulate and thank Shelby for her time and dedication to the Miss America Organization, Miss Thousand Island and Miss New York.
The Miss New York Scholarship Board is an all volunteer board made up of local business professionals and volunteers who believe in the Miss America mission of providing scholarships to young women to pursuer there dream of going to college and preparing for a career.
Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. The Miss New York Scholarship Organization provides viable educational opportunities to the young women of New York through scholarships, service and volunteerism. It strives to recognize the intelligence, talent, moral character and personal commitment of its exceptional participants as they pursue excellence.
