The KYDS Coalition is sponsoring a public awareness campaign this month to educate parents and teens on the dangers of social hosting, the illegal practice of parents hosting underage drinking parties in their homes. The practice is illegal. To anonymous report underage drinking parties, you can call state police at 1-866-UNDER21.
Also this month, the coalition is hosting a KYDS Spring Break from 1 to 6 p.m. April 8 at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome. The event will feature appearances from the Binghamton Senators and Binghamton University Bearcats mascots, performances by the Children's Dance Theatre and BU Dance Team, giveaways and snacks.
In addition, the group is sponsoring its third annual TV commercial contest. Teens are invited to come up with a 30 second ad focused on how parents can best speak to their kids about underage drinking and drug use. The winning idea will be given local airtime.
